Tasks (Part 5)
Checkpoints (Part 5)
Task #1: Eliminate 2 Suspects
Select the suspect you'd like to eliminate, and if it's one of the correct suspects, you'll then be prompted to pick 2 pieces of evidence that show why this suspect can be eliminated.
If you think you need help with one of the suspects, but aren't sure which one (i.e. aren't sure which is suspect #1 and which is suspect #2, click here.)
Hints: Task #1 — Eliminate 2 Suspects
If you know one of the suspects, but need help/hints for the second suspect, answer the question below (it will tell you which hint section to go to - if you know who "Suspect #1" is, you'll be told to go to the Hint section for Suspect #2 and vice-versa).
If you need help figuring out both suspects, you can look at either set of hints (i.e. you can look at the hints for suspect #1 first or the hints for suspect #2 - it's up to you).
To access the hints for suspect #1, click here.
To access hints for suspect #2, click here.
Hints: Task #1 — Suspect #1
These hints are for helping you figure out who suspect #1 is and the pieces of evidence that show why we can eliminate them.
If you forget which suspect was which, click here.
Hint #1
Examine the Gordon's Trinkets receipt very carefully.
Can the Gordon's trinkets receipt be linked to the crime scene?
Hint #2
Read the "Shadows Over Millfield" review carefully.
If you're not sure how the Gordon's trinkets receipt can be linked to the crime scene, read the forensic analysis report.
Hint #3
There is an ad for Gordon's Trinkets in the "Shadows Over Millfield" review. Does anything in the ad look familiar?
If you're not sure how the Gordon's trinkets receipt can be linked to the crime scene, read the forensic analysis report.
Hint #4
The ad for Gordon's Trinkets in the "Shadows Over Millfield" review features a necklace with a cat on it. This featured necklace matches the necklace included in the part 5 evidence bag. Can you connect the necklace to the Gordon's Trinkets receipt?
Hint #5
The necklace in the part 5 evidence bag (the cat necklace) is the necklace Summer's killer left on Summer at the crime scene. The part 5 evidence inventory says the necklace was found at the crime scene. The crime scene report also mentions a necklace was placed on Summer and collected as evidence.
The Gordon's Trinkets receipt is for the same necklace (same name and price) as the necklace Summer's killer left at the crime scene. We can infer that the Gordon's Trinkets receipt belongs to Summer's killer because it (the receipt) was found with other incriminating evidence in Highland Park. The forensic analysis report shows that the receipt was disposed of alongside other items that had blood and/or Summer's DNA on them. All items disposed of in Highland Park (including the receipt) had Summer's killer's DNA on them.
The Gordon Trinket's receipt belongs to Summer's killer — the killer got it when they purchased the cat necklace (that they placed on Summer). The killer disposed of the receipt (alongside other items, like bloody gloves) in Highland Park.
Hint #6
When was the necklace bought?
Do any remaining suspects have alibis for when the necklace was bought?
Hint #7
Read the Mercy Hospital Staff Schedule.
Hint #8/Answer
The Mercy Hospital Staff Schedule shows that Harrison was working when the necklace was bought. We can eliminate Harrison as a suspect.
Hints: Task #1 — Suspect #2
These hints are for helping you figure out who suspect #2 is and the pieces of evidence that show why we can eliminate them. Don't click through these hints if you know who suspect #2.
If you forget which suspect was which, click here.
Hint #1
Can you figure out who the receipt from Bella Vista belongs to? If you know who the receipt belongs to, skip ahead to hint #6 and don't count this hint (note: if you're tracking your score, do not count the skipped hints as used hints).
If you don't know who the receipt belongs to, have careful look at the "About" page on the Still Rock Psychiatry website (www.stillrockpsychiatry.com)
Hint #2
What do the doctors (at Still Rock) like doing in their spare time?
Hint #3
One doctor is very into art.
Read the "Seattle Times" magazine carefully, paying special attention to the ads on the back.
Hint #4
There is an ad for a Van Gogh art exhibit on the back of the "Seattle Times" article. Do any of the pictures in the ad look familiar?
Hint #5
One of the Van Gogh paintings (in the ad for the Van Gogh exhibit) matches the print on the bag with the Bella Vista receipt in it. On the Still Rock website, in the "About" section, Jessica says she loves Van Gogh (and going to art galleries in her spare time).
We can assume the bag with the Bella Vista receipt in it is Jessica's.
Hint #6
Read the toxicology report and the "Understanding Antidepressants" pamphlet carefully.
Hint #7
Are there any antidepressants mentioned in the toxicology report that are also mentioned in the antidepressant brochure?
Note that the toxicology report tested blood from two people: Summer and Summer's killer (we can infer the second blood sample, Sample B, was from Summer's killer because it was found at the crime scene and labelled as "Unidentified Suspect" in the toxicology report).
Hint #8
The Bella Vista receipt (which we know is Jessica's) shows the same dish was ordered twice. We can assume that Jessica ate that dish (she likely ate out with someone else and paid for both their meals). Can you figure out what exactly was in the dish Jessica ate?
Hint #9
Compare the Bella Vista receipt to the menu from Bella Vista.
Hint #10
Are there any dietary restrictions imposed on people taking certain types of antidepressants? (Refer back to the "Understanding Antidepressants" pamphlet).
Hint #11
It's dangerous for people taking MAOIs (a type of antidepressant) to eat aged cheeses, cured meats, and fermented foods. Did Jessica eat any of these things at Bella Vista?
If you're not sure why MAOIs are being mentioned, have another look at the toxicology report.
Hint #12/Answer
The receipt from Bella Vista is Jessica's. We know this because it was found in a bag that has a Van Gogh print on it. We can recognize the Van Gogh print from the Van Gogh Exhibit ad on the back of the Seattle Times magazine. On the Still Rock Psychiatry website (www.stillrockpsychiatry.com), in the "About" section, Jessica mentions that she loves Van Gogh. We can infer the bag is Jessica's, and the Bella Vista receipt is hers.
The toxicology report mentions that Summer's killer* had an MAOI antidepressant (Phenelzine) in their system. The "Understanding Antidepressants" pamphlet tells us that patients who take MAOIs should not eat certain foods, like aged cheeses, cured meats, and fermented foods.
The receipt from Bella Vista lists an order for two rustic tuscan platters. If we look at the Bella Vista menu, we see that the rustic tuscan platter includes "a delectable selection of aged cheeses." Note that the receipt is from September 13th (the day before Summer's murder), and the presence of phenelzine was detected in the suspect's blood the next day. Summer's killer had phenelzine in their blood on September 14th. It would be dangerous for Summer's killer to have been eating aged cheeses the day before (September 13th). We can assume that Jessica would know this (because she's a psychiatrist) and would not be eating aged cheeses if she was taking phenelzine.
We can exclude Jessica as a suspect based on the toxicology report and the Bella Vista receipt.
*Although the toxicology report doesn't say that the person with phenelzine in their blood is Summer's killer, the report says that the blood from "Sample B" (the blood with the phenelzine in it) is from an "Unidentified Suspect" and was found at the crime scene (along with Summer's blood). The forensic analysis report mentions that DNA from Sample B was found on other items at the crime scene (like bloody gloves that had Summer's DNA on them). We can infer that "Sample B" comes from Summer's killer.
Checkpoint #1 — Who Sent the Postcard From "Aloha"?
When you think you know the answer, the first name of the person below. If you're right, you will be asked which piece of evidence (besides the postcard) helped you reach this conclusion.
Hints: Checkpoint #1 — Who Sent the Postcard From "Aloha"?
Hint #1
Check the return address on the postcard.
Hint #2
Examine the Still Rock website carefully (www.stillrockpsychiatry.com)
Hint #3
On Still Rock's home page, read the bios for each staff (Jessica, Summer, Ezra) carefully.
Hint #4/Answer
The postcard was sent in 2015 from an address where Ezra was working in 2015 (466 Oak Street, Havenwood, California - on Still Rock's home page, see Ezra's bio).
Ezra sent the postcard.
Checkpoint #2: Who Broke into Summer's House on February 7th, 2019?
Read the "Suspected Burglary Report". Who (if anyone) broke into Summer's house on that day?
Hints: Checkpoint #2 — Who Broke into Summer's House on February 7th, 2019?
See the "Suspected Burglary Report". Who broke into Summer's house (if anyone)?
Hint #1
Read the Evidence Inventory List from part 4 and cross reference it with the Suspected Burglary Report.
Hint #2
On February 7th, 2019, police found a guitar pick outside Summer's residence. This is the same day as the suspected burglary. We can infer that the person who broke into Summer's house likely dropped it. Pay special attention to the design on the guitar pick. Does it look familiar?
Hint #3
The design on the guitar pick matches the logo on the Incident Report from "Rising Phoenix Youth Program". Read the incident report carefully. Based on this report, there are two potential people who could have plausibly broken into Summer's house (and left the guitar pick).
Hint #4
Either Dante or Luka likely broke into Summer's house. They were in a Rising Phoenix Youth Program guitar class together (so it makes sense that they would have a guitar pick with the Rising Phoenix logo). Can you rule either of them out? Check the Offender Record evidence that was included in this envelope.
Hint #5/Answer
The offender record shows that Dante was in prison when the suspected burglary happened, so he couldn't have broken in Summer's house. That leaves Luka. Luka broke in to Summers's house.
