Summer was having an affair with Medina. Luna wrote Harrison a note (the "Chapter 6: The Brain") note telling him about the affair. Harrison was planning on divorcing Summer. Harrison's most likely motive would have been to punish Summer for her infidelity.

The letter is dated August 19, 2019. What other things happen around this time frame?

In the Seattle Scene, there's an article about an MMA fighter (Alex Romero). The article mentions he lost a fight on August 21st, 2019.

Summer wrote a blog post on August 30th, 2019. In it, she mentions finding a "surprise" on her desk. Who left the "surprise"?

In Summer's blog post, she says the "surprise" was in an envelope with a cute cat sticker. The envelope labelled as Evidence #849B has a cute cat sticker on it. Fingerprints were collected from the items in the envelope (Evidence #849A is the finegrprints). Whose fingerprints are they?

The fingerprints are Jessica's (you can figure it out by comparing the fingerprints of each suspect to the fingerprints in Evidence #849A). Jessica left the "surprise" for Summer on August 30th (a Friday).

The letter (Evidence #844A) tells "J" that unless she pays by Friday, she needs to "go in SL's office" and "leave it in plain sight". We can infer that because Jessica didn't pay, she left a "surprise" in Summer's office on August 30th, as per the instructions of the letter.

Why would Jessica need to pay someone?

Who is "K" (the person who signed the letter) and why would they want Jessica to leave something in Summer's office? Look at what Jessica left in Summer's office - is there any significance to it?

Read the Incident Report (documenting the suspected burglary at Summer's house).

The Incident Report mentions that Summer thinks a cat necklace was stolen from her residence. Jessica left a cat necklace in Summer's office. This is probably the same necklace.

The Incident Report mentions that although Summer suspected Dante had broken into her home, he couldn't have (because he was in jail). If Dante didn't break into Summer's house, who did? Did the burglar leave anything behind?

The burglar left behind a guitar pick with a phoenix on it. Does the phoenix look familiar?

The phoenix on the guitar pick is the same phoenix depicted on the report from "Phoenix Rise" - a youth program Dante and Kingston went to together. The report mentions a guitar class. The guitar pick is from Phoenix Rise, and since Dante didn't leave it at Summer's (he was in jail), we can infer Kingston did. Kingston broke into Summer's house and stole the necklace, and Kingston wrote the letter to Jessica (Kingston is "K").

Kingston and Dante are very close. Have you decoded the jail letter (written by Dante)? If not, decode it.

Jessica owed Kingston money. We know she placed a large bet on Alex Romero (seee the Reggie's Casino receipt). She lost the bet (see the interview with Alex Romero in the Seattle Scene). The bet was for $25,000.

The letter from "K" (aka Kingston) told Jessica that unless she paid by Friday, she would have to leave something in SL's (aka Summer Lachance's) office. The letter was sent on Monday. Jessica placed the bet on Tuesday, and lost on Wednesday. On Friday, she placed something on Summer's desk, as the letter instructed her to.

Based on the large bet Jessica placed after receiving Kingston's letter, we can assume she has a gambling problem. She placed a large bet hoping she would win and be able to pay Kingston back. This is the behaviour of someone with a gambling problem (i.e. placing huge bets/"doubling down" to try and recoup your losses).

She lost. She was trying to "get out" of the hole she was in/debt she owed Kingston by doubling down with a huge bet, which she lost).

Dante and Kingston have been friends for a long time (see the Phoenix Rise report). We know Dante has a vendetta against Summer. We know Kingston broke into Summer's house, stole Summer's necklace, and asked Jessica to place this necklace in Summer's office. We can infer that Kingston is helping Dante harass and intimidate Summer (while Dante is in jail).

Jessica is a pawn in Kingston and Dante's plan to harass Summer. We don't know how much she knows (i.e. does Jessica know Dante and Kingston are working together? Does Jessica know why Kingston wanted her to leave the necklace in Summer's office? Or is Jessica operating under a "don't ask/don't tell" policy?). We can't assume Jessica knows she's contributing to Summer's harassment (as noted in her blog, Summer didn't go to police about the "surprise", so Summer might be keeping quiet about her harassment and not telling anyone, including her coworkers).

Jessica's most likely motive to kill Summer would have been to pay off a debt (to Kingston). Kingston is leveraging Jessica's gambling problem to get Jessica to harass Summer. Jessica owed Kingston money (when Kingston wrote her the letter), and then she placed a bet and lost $25,000 (and likely now owes him even more money). We don't know how far Kingston plans to take things (in terms of harassing Summer), but seeing as he and Dante are both dangerous individuals, it's not a stretch to imagine that he could escalate to murder (and use Jessica to get it done).

Examine the Gordon's Trinkets receipt very carefully.

Can the Gordon's trinkets receipt be linked to the crime scene (i.e. in Summer's office)? Reread the crime scene report if you need a refresher.

Have a look at the page from the "The Seattle Scene"

The necklace found at the crime scene is described as gold and having a "charm with wings". The necklace included as a physcal piece of evidence fits this description and matches the necklace in the ad for Gordon's trinkets (the ad is in "The Seattle Scene"). The receipt is for a necklace that matches the description and price of the necklace in the ad (which looks the same as the physical necklace that was found at the scene). We can infer that the receipt from Gordon's trinkets is for the same necklace that was placed on Summer after her death. We can assume that whoever killed Summer placed the necklace on her and disposed of its receipt (along with other items, like the gloves and the trophy, for example) in HIghland Park. We can infer that Summer's killer bought the necklace.

When was the necklace bought?

Does any remaining suspect have an alibi for the time when the necklace was bought?

We can eliminate Harrison.

The Mercy Hospital Staff Schedule shows that Harrison was working when the necklace was bought. Harrison is not the killer.

Harrison lied to police about his alibi, though, because he was likely visiting a divorce lawyer at the time Summer was killed. In the locked basketball bag, there was a retainer for a lawyer. The retainer was dated September 14th but didn't give a time, so this couldn't give Harrison an alibi. It makes sense, though, that he didn't want to tell police that he was visiting a divorce lawyer on the day his wife was found murdered. It makes sense that Harrison was looking to divorce Summer given the state of their marriage. Summer has several blog posts alluding to this (the fact that Harrison wasnt at the fourth of July fireworks, for example), and Harrison mentions sleeping in a different bed in his witness statement. We also know that Harrison had a letter from Luna in his locked basketball box that said Summer was cheating on him. If he believed this, this is another reason why he'd want to divorce Summer.

Can you figure out who the receipt from Bella Vista belongs to? If you know who the receipt belongs to, skip ahead to hint #6 and don't count this hint (note: if you're tracking your score, do not count the skipped hints as used hints).

Read the "Seattle Times" magazine carefully, paying special attention to the ads on the back.

There is an ad for a Van Gogh art exhibit on the back of the "Seattle Times" article. Do any of the pictures in the ad look familiar?

One of the Van Gogh paintings (in the ad for the Van Gogh exhibit) matches the print on the bag with the Bella Vista receipt in it. On the Still Rock website, in the "About" section, Jessica says she loves Van Gogh (and going to art galleries in her spare time).

We can assume the bag with the Bella Vista receipt in it is Jessica's.

Read the toxicology report and the "Understanding Antidepressants" pamphlet carefully.

Are there any antidepressants mentioned in the toxicology report that also show up in the antidepressant brochure?

Note that the toxicology report tested blood from two people: Summer and Summer's killer (we can infer the second blood sample, Sample B, was from Summer's killer because it was found at the crime scene and labelled as "Unidentified Suspect" in the toxicology report).

The Bella Vista receipt (which we know is Jessica's) shows the same dish was ordered twice. We can assume that Jessica ate that dish (she likely ate out with someone else and paid for both their meals). Can you figure out what exactly was in the dish Jessica ate?

Compare the Bella Vista receipt to the menu from Bella Vista.

Are there any dietary restrictions imposed on people taking certain types of antidepressants? (Refer back to the "Understanding Antidepressants" pamphlet).

It's dangerous for people taking MAOIs (a type of antidepressant) to eat aged cheeses, cured meats, and fermented foods. Did Jessica eat any of these things at Bella Vista?

The receipt from Bella Vista is Jessica's. We know this because it was found in a bag that has a Van Gogh print on it. We can recognize the Van Gogh print from the Van Gogh Exhibit ad on the back of the Seattle Times magazine. On the Still Rock Psychiatry website (www.stillrockpsychiatry.com), in the "About" section, Jessica mentions that she loves Van Gogh. We can infer the bag is Jessica's, and the Bella Vista receipt is hers.

The toxicology report mentions that Summer's killer* had an MAOI antidepressant (Phenelzine) in their system. The "Understanding Antidepressants" pamphlet tells us that patients who take MAOIs should not eat certain foods, like aged cheeses, cured meats, and fermented foods.

The receipt from Bella Vista lists an order for two rustic tuscan platters. If we look at the Bella Vista menu, we see that the rustic tuscan platter includes "a delectable selection of aged cheeses." Note that the receipt is from September 13th (the day before Summer's murder), and the presence of phenelzine was detected in the suspect's blood the next day. If Jessica was taking phenelzine on September 14th, she would not have been consuming aged cheese the day before (this is very dangerous, and as a psychiatrist, we can reasonably expect Jessica to know this. Also, the "Understanding Antidepressants" pamphlet was published by Still Rock - and likely in the Still Rock office - which is another reason why we'd expect Jessica to know this information).

We can exclude Jessica as a suspect based on the toxicology report and the Bella Vista receipt.

*Although the toxicology report doesn't say that the person with phenelzine in their blood is Summer's killer, the report says that the blood from "Sample B" (the blood with the phenelzine in it) is from an "Unidentified Suspect" and was found at the crime scene (along with Summer's blood). The forensic analysis report mentions that DNA from Sample B was found on other items at the crime scene (like the gold necklace) and on bloody gloves that found in Highland Park. We can infer that "Sample B" comes from Summer's killer.
